Preview of the 2009 Guitar Syllabus

In July we will be publishing a revised guitar syllabus featuring revised set piece, scale and sight-reading requirements. Here Nigel Scaife, Syllabus Director, reports on the significant changes and provides a preview of some of the exciting support materials being published.

Read Nigel Scaife's supporting preview of the 2009 piano syllabus>>

Revising any syllabus requires much consultation with teachers and very careful deliberation. In the case of guitar, this process will have taken us about three years, from the first working party meeting to the publication of the syllabus and support materials later this year. During this time we have been in touch with guitar teachers via a major pilot study and the detailed feedback generated by this project has been invaluable – many thanks to all those who took the time to share their views with us.

Repertoire

We have refreshed the repertoire lists, reflecting the diverse range of good-quality publications that have come into existence in recent years. We have included some excellent core pieces that have not been on the syllabus before, many suggested by teachers. For continuity, about 10% of the repertoire from the current syllabus is being kept. Also, in the lower grades we are retaining a selection of accompanied pieces using a single-line approach for the candidate.

Overall, in choosing the pieces we have worked to achieve a clear sense of the technical progression through the grades and to ensure that there is parity with the demands of other instruments. The wealth of new and exciting repertoire should entice and challenge pupils at all levels and make for really enjoyable music making.

New resources

To complement the new repertoire lists we will be publishing a range of resources for teachers and pupils. ABRSM Publishing is extending its popular Time Pieces series to embrace guitar. The two volumes of Time Pieces for Guitar will include items from each list at Grades 1 and 2 in the first volume and Grades 3 to 5 in the second. There are over 30 pieces in each, covering the whole gamut of styles and periods from Sumer is icumen in of 1250 to newly commissioned pieces by Colin Tommis, Andy Crowdy, Colin Downs and Stephen Goss. These volumes will provide a helpful selection of potential exam pieces and a rich source of repertoire for developing guitarists.

We are also publishing new editions of music by Weiss and Scarlatti, bringing together syllabus pieces selected for use at Grades 6, 7 and 8 in single volumes, and producing a set of CDs containing recordings of the guitar syllabus pieces at all eight grades.

Sight-reading

With the new sight-reading tests we are trying to encourage and enable a more musical approach to sight-reading. The new tests have been written in attractive styles and will not present greater technical challenges than the current materials. At the lower grades they are shorter than the current ones, allowing greater focus on musical detail, and from Grade 6 all tests have titles so that they appear as real pieces, helping candidates to get a feel for the musical mood and style.

Scales

In putting together the new requirements we considered many issues such as the unnecessary duplication of scales using identical left-hand fingerings, the role of the thumb, the progression of scales in intervals, and the use of rhythm patterns.

Some of the main changes are outlined here.

Right-hand finger scales are now complemented by lower-octave scales played by the thumb alone at Grades 1 and 2, and by those in which the thumb plays the lower octave and the fingers the upper at Grades 3 to 5. These patterns promote independence of thumb movement and a stable right-hand position when changing between thumb and fingers.

From Grade 3 we have introduced scales in intervals which relate directly to patterns found so frequently in guitar music.

We now make a distinction between over-ringing broken chords and non-over-ringing arpeggios. We hope that this new feature will help students to understand the function of different musical elements – whether an arpeggiated passage is part of a melodic line or the accompanying harmonic texture.

Candidates will no longer have to play scales with specified right-hand fingerings. However, we will be providing some guideline fingering in the scale books.

The new requirements represent a more logical progression up the grades, with tasks more closely interrelated for easier absorption. Candidates will have covered all keys by the time they reach Grade 8, and even with the additions outlined above, there is a considerable reduction in the number of items required at each grade.

The new guitar syllabus, valid from January 2009, will be published in July together with the scale and sight-reading books. Time Pieces for Guitar, the CDs of Guitar Exam Pieces and the Weiss and Scarlatti books will be available later in the year.

Beethoven Piano Sonatas: New edition now available

We are delighted to announce the publication of a new edition of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas, edited by Professor Barry Cooper, a renowned authority on Beethoven, widely known for completing the unfinished Tenth Symphony, and author of several books on the composer.

Barry Cooper has been working for ten years on the edition. His work represents the latest original research into the Piano Sonatas and he has tried to reproduce what Beethoven actually wrote - and what he meant to write - more accurately than has been done in any previous edition.

Notable among the features of the edition is that there are 35 sonatas while all other recent editions have 32. Cooper says: 'The three extra ones are normally omitted as they were very early works written when Beethoven was 12. I feel there is no reason to omit them as they are full scale works.

Key features of the edition:

faithful to the original notation, correcting long-standing errors found in other editions

presents new and important research

general Introduction covering performance practice, including tempo, articulation, pedalling and dynamics

commentary to each sonata, including history, full assessment of the sources and detailed notes on interpretation

introductory CD of commentary and demonstrations included in each volume

Created for today's performers, teachers and scholars, this is the most comprehensive study of these extraordinary works yet undertaken and sets a new standard for scholarly performing editions.

This new edition is available now from all good music stores, or click below to buy yours online.

Format

ISBN

Price

Volume 1

978-1-86096-245-5

£16.95

Volume 2

978-1-86096-246-2

£16.95

Volume 3

978-1-86096-247-9

£16.95

Boxed set of Volumes 1-3

978-1-86096-890-7

£50.00

The volume comes with a CD recording of all 16 pieces.

Ben Selby, ABRSM’s Publishing Director, said: “We're delighted to have again won an award for Spectrum - the third MIA award for this series. Spectrum has played a major role in introducing contemporary music to a new audience, the series having sold some 35,000 copies since the first piano volume was released in 1996. This award recognises ABRSM's commitment to supporting living composers, and we thank all those who voted.”

The hugely successful Spectrum series was established by ABRSM Publishing with pianist and teacher Thalia Myers, with the goal of commissioning some of the finest composers to write pieces of modest length and difficulty, while preserving the essential characteristics of their compositional style, providing technically accessible music for players of all ages and abilities.

The series now encompasses four piano albums and one for cello, with a volume for violin in preparation. The first two piano albums - Spectrum and Spectrum 2 - have already been celebrated with MIA awards.

“The best book of contemporary music for clarinet I have seen.
Retailer Open Day

ABRSM Publishing hosted their first open day on Sunday 8 July for retailers. The day consisted of speeches by directors from across the Associated Board which were aimed at informing attendees of the Board's many activities. This was followed by a buffet lunch and a guided river cruise along the Thames.
Washington High Scorers celebrate achievements with a concert

On January 6, 2007 Washington State celebrated the achievement of it's exam candidates by hosting an ABRSM High Scorers’ Concert. The concert took place at Sherman Clay Pianos Recital Room in Bellevue, Washington and featured performances from the 36 students who achieved Merit and Distinction results in their Practical Exams taken during October to December last year.

The concert brought together a whole community of performers, students, teachers and parents, giving everybody a chance to share their musical talents, tastes and experiences.

Given the large numbers participating and attending, the concert was split into two parts - Grade 1-3 candidates performed at Session I, and Grades 4-8 performed at Session II.

Performers described their thrill at being able to perform their pieces in public and those pianists taking part were delighted to have the opportunity to play a wonderful Steinway piano, provided by Sherman Clay Pianos.

The highlight of the evening was, of course, the presentation of High Scorers badges in recognition of each candidate's achievement. For the first time in Washington State, special awards were also given to the Top Scorer from each grade.

The concert generated a fantastic atmosphere and a great deal of positive feedback from teachers and parents who felt that it had helped to energize and encourage their students to pursue their future musical aims and ambitions.

There have so far been four albums for piano and one for cello.

The SPECTRUM series has so far involved the commissioning of 189 pieces from 127 composers from 42 countries.

The main purpose of the SPECTRUM series is to create a repertoire of new music for amateur and professional players; composers were commissioned to write short pieces with carefully-graded technical demands, at the same time preserving the essential characteristics of their compositional style.

The clarinet book covers technical demands ranging in standard from grades 1 to 8 and presents a colourful collection of pieces that are satisfying to play and offer interesting and stimulating challenges to performers. The book includes a CD of all 16 pieces performed by Ian Mitchell and Thalia Myers, pianist, teacher and instigator of SPECTRUM.

Contributing composers to SPECTRUM for CLARINET include international names such as Mark-Anthony Turnage, Nicola LeFanu, Robert Saxton, Elena Firsova and Libby Larsen.

The album was launched at the Clarinet and Saxophone Society's annual conference on 29 October 2006 where performances of pieces from the album were premiered by Ian Mitchell, clarinet students from the Royal College of Music Junior Department and Thalia Myers.

Review copies and further information from:

Debbie Butler
ABRSM Publishing
24 Portland Place
London W1B 1LU
tel: +44 (0)20 7467 8272
email: dbutler@abrsm.ac.uk
www.abrsmpublishing.com
