As the ABRSM South East Asia Regional Coordinator it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our Malaysia home page. My name is Bill Thomson and although I spend much time working from our International Office in central London, I have the pleasure of visiting Malaysia no less than five times every year.
We conduct a full range of practical examinations (including Diplomas and Jazz examinations) as well as Theory of Music examinations in Malaysia and East Malaysia each year.
Teacher support is provided in the form of the Professional Development Programme, a series of seminars which take place across the country each year, usually in the month of August. These events provide teachers with an opportunity to network professionally. The seminars are very popular with teachers and the ABRSM usually calls upon its close collaboration with the Royal Schools of Music in appointing Professors from the Schools to present them.
A series of annual High Scorers' Concerts take place in several Malaysian cities and these events serve to showcase gifted and talented performers who have received the very highest marks in their examinations.
Successful ABRSM Diploma candidates are invited to attend the annual SE Asia Diploma Ceremony and Celebrations which normally takes place in March or April. In recent years the event has taken place in Malaysia, Indonesia and in Singapore and it is a highlight of the year and includes a splendid recital given by top Diploma Distinction holders.
The journal Upbeat! is a magazine dedicated to ABRSM applicants, teachers and candidates in SE Asia and this is issued three times each year.
ABRSM Publishing Company is one of the largest and widely respected educational music publishers. Music shops across the country stock a good range of materials and can readily obtain orders directly on your behalf from the UK.
The ABRSM is proud of its many eminent Malaysian musicians who have a close association either through their study at the Royal Schools or having been granted ABRSM scholarships. Dennis Lee (an ABRSM examiner and concert pianist of International acclaim) comes from Penang; Bobby Chen, the young Malaysian pianist currently making an impression on the world-stage is from Sabah; Loo Bang Hean is an ex ABRSM Scholar and student of Yonty Solomon at the RCM.
Malaysia is indeed a dynamic country and the ABRSM is proud to be able to serve the teachers and, at the same time, make a valuable contribution in helping to shape the careers of young, aspiring musicians.
