Hi everyone,

This is just a curiosity poll.

I often hear of people wanting to play another instrument they're really attracted to, but there are lots of people who love what they play. What's your situation?

I like the viola I play, but have bought a second-hand cello and am looking forward to learning to play it!

Mmm - well I play piano, and sing (though maybe that doesn't count) - I often think about other instruments but with various aches and pains that develop as one ages, I think I'd be best suited to a cello, and hopefully stand a reasonable chance of getting into some kind of basic orchestra.  Flute would be ok, but I'd never be good enough in this life to be in an orchestra/band

I play flute. But, I have always fancied having a go on saxophone (soprano in particular), oboe and piano. Also, would love to try bagpipes or uillean pipes.

Three votes for another instrument and all three for cello. I reckon the other three are probably cellists too...

Yeah. Seems like it. Why does everyone want to learn cello? I've seen this trend so many times that people have prompted me the question "Do you want to play cello?" My answer, as a perfectby content pianist, violinist, and violist, is "no, not really." I love the deep and rich tone of the cello (I think that's why it's so attracted). I'm sure I would love playing the cello (I tried it for a few minutes, by the way), but it's too hard to lug around for me. That's the only thing that stops me (and many others) from taking it up.

I ticked guitar because it's the closest match, but really I'd like to learn lute or even theorbo (except I don't live in a light-house so I haven't got room for a theorbo). But at risk of going offTopic.gifI'm more wishing that one or two other people whom I know played other instruments. It'd be nice to have someone in the family playing something that gave them an interest in playing with a recorderist. But the kid (who is only just mature enough to have a go) veers madly between cello and trumpet, hasn't made his mind up which he'd like to try, and trumpet is Outrageously Loud. He'll have to follow his heart, but I sort-of hope his heart isn't set on something completely impractical.

I cannot play anything nor sing.

I'm very slowly trying to learn piano, but have also long been enchanted with the idea of playing the bassoon (anyone have a spare wanting a loving new home?).  The 'cello and bass clarinet also appeal quite a bit – seems really I have an unsatiated affinity for that tenor/baritone register!

Would love to try a pipe organ, even just the once!  And perhaps oddly, the timpani, though Heaven know why given my awful sense of timing and rhythm.

Oh, and jazz vibraphone!

I play Clarinet as my main instrument

but i play so many other instruments (to varying levels of ability) and still want to play more despite the fact i can't really afford any instruments

Can you tell how much i love music?

my current list of instruments are (they're also in my signature):

  • Clarinet (can also play bass clarinet but don't own one currently)
  • Saxophone (basics of alto, tenor and soprano)
  • Flute (self taught basics)
  • Piano (basics; hands separate (can't coordinate my hands)
  • Guitar (basics; hands a bit too small so can't stretch for chords)
  • Ukulele (current favourite instrument bar clarinet)
  • Recorder (descant and treble)

my current instrument wants

  • Trumpet (i have one that used to be my boyfriends but he didn't want it so it's mine now)
  • Bass Clarinet (i really want my own one but i can't afford it right now)
  • Eb Clarinet
  • A clarinet
  • Alto Clarinet
  • Trombone (for no other reason but because i want to learn it to play it in band

Can't afford any of these right now as i currently work 1-2 shifts a week in a (well known) card shop

I sing. My main instrument is cello. I also play tenor and bass viola da gamba (viol), alto and tenor saxophone and piano (badly). I'm trying to learn bass guitar.

if I had the time/money I would add treble viol and baritone sax

No. Two is enough and at the moment it's only one seriously.

I play two reasonably well, and sing, plus a handful of others rather badly - but have always rather fancied the harp.
