Those of you that teach in primary schools in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland may be interested to know that we have launched a free online resource designed to ignite pupils' enthusiasm for classical music.

Complementing existing teaching resources, Classical 100 has been developed by ABRSM in partnership with Classic FM and Decca Classics (and with the support of the Department for Education).

Classical 100 is built around 100 recordings of classical music pieces which teachers can draw upon in lessons, school assemblies and other school activities. Alongside a recording of each of the works taken from Decca’s world-renowned catalogue, there is information about the composer and the story behind the music. We will draw on our network of primary school experts to create and publish a range of downloadable materials on the resource throughout the academic year, thereby helping teachers to bring music to life in the classroom.
 
To encourage pupils to explore, discover and listen – and ultimately to develop their own personal interests, tastes and talents – the 100 pieces embrace a rich diversity of styles ranging over ten centuries, (from Hildgarde of Bingen to Graham Fitkin via JS Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and more) and can be sorted according to a variety of criteria, such as mood, genre, country of origin or even when they were written.

Ed, thanks for this. Any information on how school peripatetic teachers get to access this or does it have to be through the school?

Are there any plans to extend this to teachers outside the Uk in the future? It sounds very interesting!

Peripatetic teachers would need to register on behalf of a particular primary school at this stage and we're initially only able to offer the resource within England, though we're actively investigating options with regards to later extending its availability once we've analysed the feedback from the initial release.

Are you considering extending the availability to studio teachers, or is that a step too far?

The possibility of extending the availability is definitely under consideration - we're keen to see the feedback from the initial launch as that will help inform any decisions we make, but we're very happy about the level of interest we've seen from studio teachers and those outside England and will certainly factor that into any future plans.

When you say primary school, does that include infant schools or is it just available for junior schools?

I think it's brilliant!  I signed up at the ABRSM conference as a peri and have already used it in lessons today

Would it be available to Home-educated children does anyone know? We get materials from the BBC's '10 pieces' and it's only just dawned that this may be an option.

I'm interested to know that too, as the grandmother of a home-educated child who also has many home-ed friends, at least one of them home-educated for health reasons - cystic fibrosis made regular school attendance impossible.

Sadly, the answer was no, for the time being atleast I have been advised to keep an ear to the ground though, as this may be a future possibility for home-educated children.
