There have been a number of newspaper articles recently extolling the benefits of choral singing. These have gone on to state that there are more people in choirs at the moment than play amateur football. Whilst that may well be so, just how are these membership numbers arrived at?
Nobody has ever asked me a) do I sing in a choir, b) how many choirs am I a member of, c) do I run a choir?
I have almost 40 names on the books of the choir I direct, but I know a large proportion of those are members of other choirs, some singing with as many as 4 different choral groups. On the other hand, there are 30 registered choristers in my church choir, whereas we rarely see more than 12 on an "ordinary" Sunday.
Anybody know the answers?
