In early 2024 we’re changing the name of our Performance Assessment to the Open Music Assessment to better reflect the accessible nature of this assessment.

We're not making any changes to the assessment itself, but we’re excited to announce that along with the change of name we’ll also be making it available to Clarion players during 2024. This is in addition to the many instrumentalists and singers who can already choose this flexible, relaxed option.

Developed by Open Up Music, an organisation that creates opportunities for young disabled people to make music, the Clarion is “an innovative accessible instrument that can be played expressively with any part of the body, including eye movement” available on iPad and PC.

Working in partnership with Open Up Music, whose National Open Youth Orchestra we support, we’ve been looking at ways to offer opportunities for recognition and reward for musicians playing this newly-developed instrument. Our Performance Assessment presents an ideal format for this.

The Performance Assessment, soon to be the Open Music Assessment, gives musicians at any level the chance to have their playing or singing assessed by one of our examiners in a face-to-face setting. The examiner listens to their performance and provides an objective, independent evaluation, with no pass or fail and no marks awarded. At the end of the assessment the examiner provides a certificate which includes their constructive comments about the performance.

For many years the Performance Assessment has provided an alternative assessment for a wide range of musicians. You can choose what to play or sing and, if you like, you can talk to the examiner briefly before your performance about what you’d like to get out of the assessment.

We know that assessments of all kinds can help to boost confidence and motivation for future learning, which in turn can increase musical enjoyment and fulfilment. We’re hugely looking forward to making the Open Music Assessment available to Clarion players during 2024.
