How to book digital exams
This page includes information about booking our digital exams:
- Performance Grades
- Online Music Theory exams (Grades 1 to 5)
- Digital ARSM, LRSM and FRSM diplomas
- Music Medals (UK only)
For these exams you video record your performance and submit the video to us for assessment. You can choose where and when to record the exam, as long as the location meets our requirements.

You can book your exam at any time. There are no set booking periods or exam dates.
You can submit the video when you book or at any time during the following 28 days. You can view the deadline (date and time) for submitting the video in your ABRSM account. The applicant or the candidate can upload and submit the video.
You can take online Music Theory exams in any location where you have access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and an internet connection. It’s also possible for more than one candidate to take exams at a single venue such as a school or other educational organisation. We do not provide Public Venues for online Music Theory exams.
Booking an exam - you can book your exam at any time. There are no set booking periods or exam dates. If you need a translation, you must select this when you book. Candidates in the UK do not have a choice of languages and must take the exam in English.
Taking the exam - once the exam is booked, it takes three hours for the exam link to become available in the candidate’s ABRSM account. They then have 28 days to take the exam. They can take it on any date and at any time during this 28-day period.
There are a small number of dates and times when candidates cannot take an exam due to system updates taking place. You can check these on our dates and fees page.

Digital Performance ARSM and all new ARSM, LRSM and FRSM diplomas from 2024
For digitally-assessed diplomas you prepare your evidence and submit this to us for assessment. Full details are available in the qualification specification for your diploma.

Music Medals are assessed by the teacher, who records the assessment and then submits the video along with their marks for moderation by us. You can choose where and when to record the assessment.
Booking an assessment – before you book Music Medals for the first time you must register as a teacher-assessor and complete our Music Medals training. You can then book at any time.
Submitting the assessment – once you’ve booked we email you the Option tests within five days, and you have eight weeks to record and submit the assessment.
