Scholarships

We have made annual charitable donations to support the work of our four associated Royal Schools for many years and in more recent years introduced scholarships at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

We provide scholarships to outstanding students at the colleges, with more than 80 scholars benefiting from ABRSM funding each year.

We support the following scholarships at each of our four associated Royal Schools:

  • 1 junior
  • 4 UK undergraduates
  • 2 UK postgraduates
  • 4 EU undergraduates
  • 2 EU postgraduates
  • 4 international undergraduates
  • 2 international postgraduates

We also provide 2 junior and 5 undergraduate scholarships at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama each year.

ABRSM scholarships cover the following:

  • Juniors receive a tuition fee contribution for one year of study
  • UK and EU undergraduates receive a stipend for the duration of their 4-year course
  • UK and EU postgraduates receive tuition fee cover for the duration of their 2-year course
  • International scholars receive tuition fee cover plus a maintenance grant for the duration of their 4-year undergraduate or 2-year postgraduate course.
  • These awards are offered in connection with, and on the recommendation of, each of the Royal Schools of Music.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit for candidates who audition for the Royal Schools. No separate application process via ABRSM is necessary, as candidates are automatically considered for scholarships by the Admissions Board at each Royal School.

Following auditions, recommendations are made directly to ABRSM. We then approve and confirm the nominations before writing to successful scholars with the details of their award.

ABRSM scholarships are non-transferable and if at any time a scholar withdraws from their studies the Royal School concerned may be invited to nominate a replacement scholar or may be required to return the remaining funds to ABRSM.

If you are interested in an ABRSM scholarship at one of the Royal Schools, please contact the school directly or visit their webpage below for more information.

London Music Fund

ABRSM offers London Music Fund scholarships to twelve talented young London musicians to enable them to access tuition for four years.

London Music Fund is a charity that began operations in 2011 to address the middle ground between group sessions at school and continued advancement as a musician, increasing access to individual lessons and ensembles. For more information about this relationship please visit our Partnerships page

Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

In 2012 we launched a new scholarship for students attending the Academy's School of Music.

The first scholarship was awarded to seventeen-year-old Andy Chung Hok-Chun, who began his undergraduate studies at the Academy's School of Music at the beginning of September 2012 and received funding via the ABRSM scholarship for all four years of the course. We now offer an annual award to five scholars each year for the full term of their studies.

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) was established by Government Ordinance in 1984 and is a leading tertiary institution in performing arts in Asia.

It provides professional undergraduate education and practice-based postgraduate studies in Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, Theatre and Entertainment Arts, and Chinese Traditional Theatre. Its education philosophy reflects the cultural diversity of Hong Kong with emphasis on Chinese and Western traditions, and interdisciplinary learning.
